Biography
Daniel D. Harkness was born on November 26, 1877 in Buck Grove, Crawford County, Iowa. He was a plumber before he enlisted
in the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry in Troop E in 1898. As part of the Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, he was involved in
the Spanish-American War in Cuba, the Battle of Las Guasimas, the Battle of San Juan Hill, and Siege of Santiago. In 1899,
Harkness reenlisted in the 34th Infantry Regiment United States Volunteer in Company E. While in the 34th regiment, Harkness
was in the Philippines and marched from Talavera and Santo Domingo and was part of Major-General Lawton’s northern expedition
in Luzon. From 1907-1910 and in 1921, Harkness worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in the Forest Service.
Harkness enlisted in the 29th Engineers, American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) during World War I. He passed away on November
29, 1928 in Los Angeles, California.
Scope and Content
The Daniel D. Harkness papers primarily consist of diaries, military records, and photographs related to his service in the
1st Volunteer Cavalry, 34th Infantry Regiment, American Expeditionary Forces, and Forest Service. There are 189 photographs
of the Philippines, Hawaii, Arkansas, Lake Arrowhead, New Mexico, and at sea. In addition, there is ephemera related to his
time in Langres, France with the AEF. There is a folder with items related to John C. Couts and another related to Oscar N.
Land. Other ephemera includes material related to the Roosevelt's Rough Riders Reunion in 1928. There is an oversize panoramic
photograph of 604th Engineer Company D, C, and F Washington Barracks, D.C., August 1917. Note: This panoramic photograph is
fragile.
