Background
The California Council for Humanities (CCH) funded the "When We Were
Young: The Experiences of Stocktonians Across Three Generations,"
(STOCKTONSpeaks!) project conducted by Robert Benedetti at the Jacoby Center
for Public Service and Civic Leadership, University of the Pacific. The goal of
the project was to use stories to strengthen the community through the
collection of experiences of ethnic Stocktonians across three generations:
grandparents (elders), parents (adults), and young people (youth). Narratives
were collected from the following nine ethnic groups: Native American, African
American, Chinese, Italian, Japanese, Filipino, Mexican American, Cambodian,
and Hmong.
