    Biographical/Historical note

    Thornton Ladd was born in Portland, Oregon on January 29, 1924. He attended the University of Southern California where he graduated with his bachelor’s degree in architecture in 1952. He was a designer for Pereira & Luckman for two years from 1952 to 1954. In 1954, Ladd opened his own firm called Thornton Ladd & Associates. In 1959, however, Ladd entered into a partnership with architect John Field Kelsey, called Ladd and Kelsey, based in Pasadena, California. They were most well known for their contribution to the Norton Simon Museum but also designed several private residences in Beverly Hills, Pasadena, and Hollywood Hills, California. Thornton Ladd died in 2010.

    The Thornton Ladd drawings for the Mrs. Donald Bear house span 3 linear feet and date from 1955. The collection is composed of five architectural drawings in the form of blueprints. Drawings include: plot and roof plan, details, electrical and heating plan, interior and exterior elevations, and a floor plan.
