    Description: Carlos Bee served as California State Assemblyman for the 13th District from 1954, when he was first elected to the office, until 1974, when he died at the age of 57. Collection consists of legislation files and memorabilia.

    Background

    Carlos Bee, Democrat, served as a member of the California State Assembly from 1955 until his death in 1974. He represented the 13th District in the Hayward area. Bee was Speaker pro tempore of the assembly from 1959 through 1974. He was born in Berkeley, May 5, 1917, and graduated from South Pasadena High School and University of California, Santa Barbara. After completing two years of graduate work at UC Berkeley, Bee taught high school in Hayward for twelve years. From 1948-1954, he served as a Hayward city councilman, and from 1952-1954, he was Mayor of Hayward. He was elected to the state assembly in 1954. Bee was an ex-officio member of the Assembly Rules Committe as well as a member of the Assembly Committees on Intergovernmental Relations, Retirement, and Transportation. He was known throughout his career as a fervent supporter of education legislation, and he was responsible for introducing the 1957 bill that established a state college in Alameda County.

    The Carlos Bee collection contains records related to various legislative bills, resolutions, and amendments that were conceived between 1967 and 1974. The records document any actions taken following the proposal of each piece of legislation, and make note of any subsequent legislative changes that happened as a result.
