Scope and Content of Collection
The series consists of maps, pamphlets and publications commemorating the American Civil War. The Civil War, also known as
the War between States, was fought between the Union (the Northern States) and the Confederate (the Southern States), from
1861-1864. The same geographical divisions that had played a role in the Civil War itself also affected the commission that
tried to oversee Centennial activities. Not surprisingly, the Northern States' Commissions and the Southern States' Commissions
viewed the war in different ways and used different words and phrases to reflect their viewpoints.
Arrangement
This series is arranged first alphabetically by state and then chorological within each state.
