Abstract: Publications, presentations, video tapes, and digital files dating back to the 1990s from Dr. Lani Spund, former Chief Information
Systems Architect for Apple Computer Inc. while he was project leader for the Apple VITAL (Virtually Integrated Technical
Architecture Lifecycle), a blueprint for designing and managing business enterprise systems. A limited amount of materials
related to Spund's professional background and career is also included.

This collection was given by Lani Spund to Stanford University, Special Collections in 2012. Accession 2012-127.
Biographical / Historical
Dr. Lani Spund's career at Apple Inc. began in 1988, and he was responsible for guiding the design, construction, and operation
of Apple Computer's internal enterprise systems within the company's Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) division. He
became project leader for VITAL (Virtually Integrated Technical Architecture Lifecycle), Apple's comprehensive technical architecture
framework for building adaptable, platform-independent, client/server enterprise systems. The VITAL platform allowed desktop
computer users in an enterprise to view data and applications in a way that appeared integrated and without concern about
where the data resides or how to access it. Spund left Apple Computer in 1996, and went on to hold technical leadership positions
at Electronic Arts and the health sciences technology sector.

Scope and Contents
Most of the materials in this collection are from Lani Spund, project leader for VITAL at Apple Computers Inc. with some from
other project participants. Included are VITAL publications and marketing materials; and video presentations given by Spund
and others about VITAL and its integration with existing business enterprise systems. Working drafts for VITAL and related
project documentation that provide insight into the development and design processes are primarily stored on computer media
formats.
