Biography/History

Madalyn Akers Phillips (b. Maddalena Heryer, 1889) was a composer, organist, and music teacher. She studied at Knox College and the American Conservatory and was an honorary member of Sigma Alpha Iota. In 1916 she married William Fred Akers and was widowed in 1930. In 1934 she married William S. Phillips. Her compositions – for which she wrote the lyrics of many - often were of a religious or patriotic nature. They were performed by Lawrence Tibbett, John Charles Thomas, Dusolina Gianninni and others. She died in 1949 in San Diego, California.

Scope and Content

Collection consists of music composed by Madalyn Akers Phillips, and includes holograph and reproduction scores for art songs, popular songs, choral works, and instrumental works. Box 1 contains material for The Great Promise. The remaining works are arranged alphabetically by title.
