Subseries 03.16.  Deep sea square riggers, 1913-2005

Extent: 72 folders

Scope and Content Note

This research on deep sea square riggers includes vessel notes, voyage lists, correspondence, photographs, and other material.
Photographic material: Many of the photographs are annotated with vessel names, dates, and provenance. Many of the photographs are reproductions; the dates given by archives staff represent dates when the photographs were taken, not necessarily when they were printed. Many of the photographs were collected from Giles M. S. Tod and Captain W. R. Eckhart. Some of the vessels from this series were at Santa Rosalia, under different names, during World War I. Some of the photographs are possibly from Huycke's marine surveys. Other photographs appear to be images that he collected for his own reference and research.

Biography/Organization History

A square rigger is a sailing vessel with square rigged sails on two or more masts. Square rigged sails extend by yards at right angles to the fore and aft line of the vessel. Examples of square riggers are ships and barks. Source: International Maritime Dictionary by Rene de Kerchove.

Arrangement

Original order maintained. Arranged roughly alphabetically.
Photographic material: Photographs were left in original order when it was apparent that Huycke had grouped vessels together within a folder of photographs of a given letter of the alphabet; these items have separate enclosures. Archives staff then sorted material by type of photographic material and size and grouped vessels of the same name together where appropriate: there are consequently photographs of multiple vessels housed in the same enclosure.
