Historical Note
UCLA's International Studies and Overseas Program (ISOP) formally began in 1958 as the Institute of International and Foreign
Studies (IIFP). It's founding functions were to promote international interdisciplinary studies, and to serve as a liaison
for government, international agencies, and international dignitaries and visitors to the university.
Periodically ISOP engaged in special projects, such as the Iran Program of 1975 to 1979 which consisted of a formal relationship
between UCLA and the University for Teacher Education (UTE) in Tehran, Iran.
UTE was formerly a teacher-training college and became a university in 1973. UTE was interested in U.S. educational practices
and began discussions with UCLA in 1975 to develop a graduate curriculum and to expand its programming . The primary goals
of the Iran Program were to exchange training and provide research opportunities. UTE Fellowship students received graduate
and postgraduate training at UCLA and UCLA faculty and students received research opportunities in Iran.
The International Studies and Overseas Program (ISOP) was subsequently renamed the Education Abroad Program.
