Abstract: J. Clark Henley (1950 May 10-1988 August 20) was a gay artist and writer. This collection contains two map-posters by Henley. “Alligator Oz: Tails of the City, Land of Make-Believe” (1976) represents gay life in San Francisco, foregrounding gay bars, businesses, and neighborhoods. Anthropomorphized cartoon alligators, many engaged in sexual activities, populate the map. “A Butch Look at America” (1982) represents gay life in the United States. Well-known gay locations like neighborhoods in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and New York City; and resort towns like Palm Springs, CA; Provincetown, MA; and Fire Island, NY; have been enlarged to cover much of the land area of the lower 48 United States.
