This collection is open for research.
Born in the Santa Clara Valley on a farm near San Jose, CA on Feb. 20, 1897. Sweigert obtained a degree in agriculture from
UC Berkeley in 1918 and served briefly in the Army in World War One. After a few years of farming, he worked in San Francisco
for the News for seven years before becoming a socio-political cartoonist for the Chronicle in 1932, a position he held until
retirement in 1955

This item is an original political cartoon by artist, Cloyd Sweigert, depicting a Democrat mule in a tuxedo, smoking a cigarette
in a long holder with the caption "California Democrats" on the tuxedo lapel.
This cartoon was originally the property of James Roosevelt.
