Descriptive Summary

Title: Photograph album of a cross-country trip from New York to California
Date (inclusive): 1903
Collection number: 94/50
Physical Description: 1 album (204 photographic prints) : b&w ; 31 x 26 cm (album)

Photographs (199) are mounted on first [29] leaves of white paper (now very brown and brittle with age), generally four to a page, but in the case of larger photographs, one or two to a page; first [16] leaves contain captions, principally in German, neatly written in ink below photograph, including identification of subject and date. Towards the end of the album, what captions there are have been hastily scribbled in pencil, most undated. In some cases, no captions are supplied at all. Fifty-six leaves at end are blank, with five loose photographs laid in, possibly photos sent to the owner of the album from relatives or friends in Germany.

Bound in contemporary half-binding of red and green marbled paper boards, with black leather spine and corners.

Spec. Coll. copy: For preservation purposes, album has been disbound, with leaves individually housed within mylar sleeves, and laid in original album covers, preserving original arrangement. In modern beige cloth clamshell box with velcro closure; box label reads "Southern California 94/50."

Scope and Content

The first part of the album contains wintry and snowy photographs taken in Troy, Albany, and North River, N.Y.--including two photos of the garnet mill in North River in the Gore Mt. Region of the Adirondacks, site of one of the largest garnet deposits in America--followed by views of Cleveland and Detroit, and including an interior shot of the passenger steamer "Adirondack" (which traveled the Hudson River between Albany and New York City). In addition to a few shots of people--one photo is captioned Fam. Wenzinger"--there are many pictures of building construction sites, railroad bridges, and harbor scenes. The travelers stop in Chippewa Lake, N.Y. in May 1903, to see friends who have a farm there, and between Aug. and Nov. 1903, they travel around Lake Erie, possibly on the steamer "State of New York" pictured in one photo, visiting Put-In Bay, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, Ohio, Detroit, Windsor, Canada, and, finally, Chicago, with Michigan Avenue looking very undeveloped. On Nov. 10, 1902, the travelers board a train in Kansas City for the overland journey to Los Angeles, passing through Maxwell City and Las Vegas, New Mexico; and across the prairies of Arizona, as seen through the train window. In California, the group visits San Pedro, Long Beach, Elysian Park in Los Angeles, and Mount Lowe, where they ride the electric train. There are 24 photos of gold mining in the San Bernardino area, near Ludlow, including several of the buildings and landscape of the mining camp, Camp Rochester; and the shafts and tunnels at the Bagdad Mining and Milling Co. Other views include miners' cabins on Mount Lowe; the resorts of Martin's Camp and Strain's Camp near the summit of Mount Wilson, which offered meals and lodging to tourists who traveled by mule from Sierra Madre near Pasadena; the San Gabriel Mission; private homes in Los Angeles, including the "Vibratory Institute" at 427 S. Hill St.; and downtown Los Angeles. Also included is a large photo of two women in a car decorated with flowers and birds, possibly an entry in the 1903 Fiesta de las Flores in Los Angeles, or Tournament of Roses Parade in Pasadena, as well as several commercial stock photographs, such as a portrait of an Apache man by Park & Co. Photo, and Kindig photos of the San Gabriel Mountains (no. 183), and Mount Wilson (nos. 180 and 193).
