Correspondence and subject files 1976-1992

Scope and Contents

This series consists primarily of Mackenzie's correspondence advocating for students through MAIA to access higher education. It includes correspondence directly with students with whom he was connected, as well as with academics and administrators at his alma mater, Princeton University, and other universities. The correspondence is primarily student-centered, with a focus on migrant student populations and Mexican-American student populations. Also included is Mackenzie's correspondence with politicians and organizations who worked with student populations. Subject files are arranged with the correspondence in this series, as Mackenzie kept research files on education and migrant student populations in support of his advocacy work.

MAIA files 1979-1994

Administrative history

Founded in 1979 by William Mackenzie and Hubert Wyckoff, Migration and Adaptation in the Americas (MAIA) is a non-profit organization that seeks to support children of migrant farm workers in their pursuit of higher education. Along with Watsonville High School counselor Michael Sullivan, William Mackenzie mentored hundreds of college-bound students from migrant farmworker families in Pajaro Valley through the MAIA organization. As of 2023, MAIA continues to support students not only in their college application process, but also in setting up a network of support for students upon arrival to their campuses. Some projects funded and facilitated by MAIA include the Michael Sullivan Memorial Scholarships, Middle School College Tours, College Application Fee Sponsorships, and the Girls STEM Conference Transportation. MAIA supports students through collaborations with the Pajaro Valley Unified School District (PVUSD), Pajaro Valley Scholars, the Watsonville Ivy League Project (WILP), UC Santa Cruz, Cabrillo College, and Digital Nest. Some early directors and officers of MAIA included Florence Wyckoff, William Mackenzie, Michael Sullivan, Carlos Rico, Harold A. Hyde, Richard Allen, Sigrid Banks, Shirley Mackenzie, Janet Mayou, Luis Libreros, Fidelia Moreno, Silas Warner, and Horace Wilson. Florence Wyckoff, who presided over the board of directors for many years, saw MAIA's work as "helping with the process of migration and adaptation by providing seed money to assure that a steady flow of migrant children will go on to a university and come back to us as highly competent professionals."
