Abstract: The Baldwin Family was a wealthy family in Los Angeles, noted horse racers and philanthropists, beginning with Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin who came west from Ohio in 1853 and became a successful ranch owner and horse racer. Lucky's daughter Anita M. Baldwin (1876-1939) was a composer, and Dextra Baldwin McGonagle (1901-1967) was Anita's daughter and continued the family tradition of philanthropy. This collection is mostly made up of newspaper clippings about Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin, Anita M. Baldwin, and Dextra Baldwin McGonagle. In addition to newspaper clippings, there is a souvenir program in honor of Anita M. Baldwin from the Headquarters Company of the Seventh California Infantry. The materials in this collection are dated 1894-1967.

Biographical Note

The Baldwin Family was a wealthy family in Los Angeles, noted horse racers and philanthropists. Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin (1828-1909) came west from Ohio in 1853 and became a successful ranch owner and horse racer. Los Angeles Couty Arboretum is now on the land where Lucky's ranch once stood. Anita M. Baldwin (1876-1939) was Lucky's daughter, a composer, and owner of an estate in Arcadia, California known as Anokia. Dextra Baldwin McGonagle (1901-1967) was the daughter of Anita Baldwin, and continued the family tradition of philanthropy.

Scope and Contents

This collection is mostly made up of newspaper clippings about Elias Jackson "Lucky" Baldwin (1828-1909), Anita M. Baldwin (1876-1939), and Dextra Baldwin McGonagle (1901-1967). Clippings were collected by Southwest Museum directors Hector Alliot and F. W. Hodge, as well as Library staff. In addition to newspaper clippings, there is a souvenir program in honor of Anita M. Baldwin from the Headquarters Company of the Seventh California Infantry. The materials in this collection are dated 1894-1967. A published volume of poetry by Anita Baldwin entitled Random Rhymes can be found in the Library's catalog. Some of Anita's compositions can be found in MS.211 Sheet Music Collection, Braun Research Library Collection, Autry Museum of the American West.
