    Abstract: James Forbes (1871-1938), a twentieth century playwright, authored The Chorus Lady, The Commuters, and The Famous Mrs. Fair. The collection contains manuscripts, correspondence, clippings, photographs, and memorabilia related to a number of his works.

    Biography

    James Forbes was born September 2, 1871 in Salem, Ontario. He began his career as an actor in 1891 in Chicago and played comic roles for the next five years. He then served as the the drama critic for the Pittsburgh Dispatch, business manager for Henry W. Savage's Castle Square Opera Company, business representative for the Metropolitan English Opera Company and the Amelia Bingham Company, and assistant manager of Henry B. Harris Theatrical Enterprises.
    Forbes later turned to playwriting. Between 1904-1936, Forbes wrote or helped to adapt a number of plays which were produced professionally.
