Biography/Administrative History
The Butte County Railroad was incorporated in March 1902 as an interest of the Diamond Match Company. Construction started
near Chico, California, the following month. That November the Chico and Northern Railroad (a subsidiary of Southern Pacific)
purchased the Butte County Railroad. The line to Stirling, California, was completed in June 1904, with the contracting firm
of E. B. and A. L. Stone performing the construction work. The property became part of the Central Pacific Railway in 1916,
and was later known as Southern Pacific's Stirling City Branch.
Scope and Content of Collection
Includes accounting records from the construction of Butte County Railroad from Chico to Stirling, California performed by
the contractor E. B. and A. L. Stone and completed in June 1904. Documents include construction estimates, monthly work force
reports, trial balances, statements, and vouchers. There is a folder of freight bills from the Southern Pacific from 1904-1905,
an annual pass list for 1908, and an annual report to the Interstate Commerce Commission for 1906.
