Abstract: The Yamano Japanese Internment collection contains materials pertaining to the life of Japanese Americans before, during,
and after World War II. Many of the materials in the collection document their time in relocation and internment facilities.
Sakae and Matsuzo Yamano emigrated from Japan to California in the 1920’s and 1930’s. They were interned at Granada Relocation
Center and Tule Lake Relocation Center during World War II and remained interned until 1946. The collection contains photographs
of family and friends, documents from internment facilities, and family portraits.

Processing information
Processed by Phoebe Huth in 2014 in the Claremont Center for Engagement with Primary Sources (CCEPS), with assistance from
Lisa Crane. In order to process this collection, photographs were placed in mylar sleeves for preservation. In addition, photographs
in frames were taken out of their frames, placed in mylar sleeves, and the frames were discarded.
Biographical/ Historical note
Matsuzo and Sakae Yamano were born in Japan in the early 20th century and immigrated to the United States in the 1920’s and
1930’s to Oakdale, California. Sakea worked as a seamstress, while Matsuzo worked in a sawmill. The Yamanos were then interned
in Granada Relocation Center and then moved to Tule Lake Relocation Center during World War II. They were interned until 1946.
Scope and Contents of the Collection
The Yamano Japanese Internment collection contains materials pertaining to Japanese American internment during World War II
and life of Japanese Americans during this time period. Materials in this collection range from photographs of internment
camps, like Granada War Relocation Center, automobiles, Sumo wrestling, and of friends and family. There are also documents
from the internment process, like receipts, correspondence, and letters allowing for the release from Japanese internment.
There are also several portraits of families, unidentified individuals, school classes, and events such as funerals.
