Historic Landmark Commission

Series Scope and Content Summary
This series contains records created or collected by Don Rivett when he was a member of the Sacramento Historic Landmark Commission,
from 1960 to 1972. The commission was founded by the City of Sacramento in 1953 to manage and collect artifacts for a Sacramento
history museum, advise city council on historic landmarks, study local sites for potential landmark status, and place historic
markers. Directors were appointed by city council, who approved the annual budget. The first museum, a joint venture with
the city and county, was located at Pioneer Hall on 7th Street in the 1960s. By 1969 the Commission was jointly funded by
the city and county. It disbanded in 1972, after which the city and county developed the Sacramento Museum and History Commission
as a new advisory group.
Material in this series includes correspondence; meeting minutes, packets, and agenda; membership rosters; resolutions and
bylaws; reports; guidelines for recommending landmarks and suggested landmarks; photographs; clippings; ephemera; brochures,
maps, and other documents related to federal and state historic registrations and dedication ceremonies in Old Sacramento;
and photographs and correspondence related to construction and dedication of the Pioneer Bridge.

Sacramento History Center

Series Scope and Content Summary
This series is made up of material created or collected by Don Rivett when he was a board member of the Sacramento History
Center and a founder of the Sacramento History Museum. During the 1980s and 1990s, the history center was an offshoot of the
Sacramento Museum and History Commission. The organization started with an emphasis on museum collections, but a large donation
of county archives in 1976 shifted the focus, and the organization became the official archival repository for both the city
and county. The museum, at the time called the Sacramento History Center but now known as the Sacramento History Museum, was
built in Old Sacramento in 1985. Collections were stored in the Mayflower Building on 20th Street until a new storage building
was built on Sequoia Pacific Boulevard in 1990. The organization went through two name changes after its move to Sequoia Pacific:
the Sacramento Archives and Museum Collection Center (SAMCC), then, in 2009, the Center for Sacramento History.
Material in this series dates from circa 1972 to 1990, with the bulk from 1985 to 1990. It includes correspondence; meeting
minutes, packets, and agenda; member rosters and bylaws; newsletters; speaker presentations; museum support foundation records;
docent lists, training materials, recruitment efforts, and newsletters; brochures; and reports.

Sacramento Pioneer Association and Foundation

Series Scope and Content Summary
This series is made up of material created or collected by Don Rivett when he was a member of the Sacramento Pioneer Association.
Founded in 1854, the association restricted membership to those who had arrived in the city before the end of 1849. The group
built Pioneer Hall in 1868 on 7th Street, and members donated books and family heirlooms to create a library and museum. In
1873, the group changed its name to Sacramento Society of California Pioneers, and in 1891, they opened membership to the
children of members, forming an auxiliary called the Sacramento Society of Sons and Daughters of Pioneers. The auxiliary and
original association merged in 1909. In 1966, the group formed a trust with a foundation to manage it, and changed its name
to the Pioneer Memorial Trust and Sacramento Pioneer Foundation. In 1970, they changed the name back to the original Sacramento
Pioneer Association.
This series contains material for both the Sacramento Pioneer Association and its foundation. Association material include
member rosters, meetings minutes and records, newsletters, reports, brochures, and ephemera. Foundation material includes
meeting minutes and records, museum and docent records, and reports.

This series consists of material created or collected by Don Rivett when he was a member of the Sacramento County Historical
Society in the 1990s. The society was formed in 1953 and began producing its Golden Notes publication in 1954. Members held
monthly meetings, went on outings to historical places, and donated their time toward historic dedications and preservation.
Material includes society bylaws and rules; board meeting minutes and agenda; birthday celebration committee records; oral
history program records; records on the Old City Cemetery, Pioneer Burial Ground, and other historic cemeteries; copies of
Golden Nuggets publications with Rivett’s notes; Golden Notes research and publishing records; ephemera; clippings; and records

This series documents three generations of the Rivett family’s church activities and various interests. Included is material
related to Edgar Rivett and his involvement with missionary societies and the Improved Order of Red Men, the family’s involvement
