Description
The Stockton Chamber of Commerce Scrapbooks comprise three volumes that contain newspaper clippings, brochures, maps, reports,
convention programs, ballots, membership lists, and letterhead related to the Stockton Chamber of Commerce from its reorganization
in 1921 to 1965.
Background
Evidence in local newspapers suggests that the Stockton Chamber of Commerce first formed in 1895, though it apparently did
not last long in that form. The origins of the current, more permanent incarnation can be traced to 1901. Two decades later,
it was reorganized. The Chamber's original goals were to stimulate the growth of Stockton and San Joaquin County and to market
agricultural and manufactured goods. Projects it has promoted over the years included construction of a deep water port, passage
of bonds for Stockton's high school, movement of the College of the Pacific to Stockton, building of the Crosstown Freeway
and Interestate 5 between Stockton and Sacramento, and the production of movies in San Joaquin County.
