Description
The Theatre Vanguard records span the years 1971-1979 and encompass 4.5 linear feet. The collection contains organization files, maintained by administrator Douglas Edwards, on independent and experimental films screened at the theater, including correspondence, programs, press releases, clippings and reviews, and grant applications. The correspondence files contain information from the filmmakers, including biographies, filmographies, flyers, film synopses, pictorial material, and photographs. Filmex files from 1975 to 1978 document the selection of films for the annual festival held in Los Angeles. The Filmex files contain correspondence, memoranda, press releases, press clippings, and programs.
Background
Theatre Vanguard was an American exhibition venue in operation from 1973 to 1978. Theatre Vanguard ran a small, nonprofit center for performing and media arts in Los Angeles that focused on independent, avant- garde and/or noncommercial endeavors in film, music, dance, theater, poetry, and performance art.
