Abstract: The Bertha Ayers papers contains memorabilia belonging to Bertha Ayers Linder, the wife of Mayor Fred Linder. The collection includes letters, documents, newspapers, and other ephemera from Ayers' life, as well as eight school notebooks belonging to Winnie Smith, circa 1890s.

Biographical / Historical

Bertha Ayers was born to Frank Ayers and Fannie Adelia Smith Ayers on February 21, 1890. She married James Frederick Linder in 1906. Fred would be appointed fire chief for the city of Ventura in 1921 and later became a city councilmember and mayor. Bertha Ayers Linder died on June 13, 1967.

Scope and Contents

This collection contains memorabilia from Bertha Ayers. It includes a promotion certificate, memorial card, a newspaper, and handwritten notes. It also includes 8 notebooks belonging to Winnie Smith, half of which are undated and the other half are from between 1896 and 1897.
