Biography

The Grateful Dead were an American rock band that formed in 1965 in Northern California. They came to fame as part of author Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, a series of multimedia happenings centered around then-legal LSD. Famed for their concerts, the band performed more than 2,300 shows over thirty years, disbanding after the death of lead guitarist Jerry Garcia in August 1995. Although their only Top 10 hit, "Touch of Grey," charted in 1987, their popularity was based on concerts, and in their last decade they consistently placed in the top five tours every year. Known for the range of their repertoire and the caliber of their compositions, the Dead's songbook has been covered by a wide range of other musicians, from Bob Dylan to Jane's Addiction. They released thirteen studio albums and nine contemporary live albums during their career, and more than 100 live releases since then. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Scope and Content of Collection

This series contains fan and some business correspondence sent to the Grateful Dead office. Many dates are approximate; some were supplied by office staff, some by processing staff.

Scope and Contents note

Correspondence that came into the Grateful Dead office(s) concerning concerts, band members, and the surrounding scene, including mail addressed directly to Eileen Law or Gary Lambert, among others, as well as to the Grateful Dead Ticketing Service, and band members themselves. There are occasionally responses either collected directly with a letter or filed under the appropriate date.

Arrangement note

Materials in this series are arranged chronologically, based on the original order used at the offices of the Grateful Dead. Selected material was either separated out by their office staff upon receipt, or, if because of format (e.g., audio or video media, oversize artwork, manuscripts, etc.) by archives processing staff. Dates imposed by processing staff are in brackets.

Bumper stickers, petitions from Ontario Deadheads, a journal entitled The Tuscaloosan Book of the Dead, unfiled creative writing and prose, Grateful Dead inspired poetry, and postcards created by Grateful Dead merchandising divisions. Also included are memorial papers and items related to Brent Mydland, Veronica Grant, and Bill Graham.

Screenplays, film proposals, teleplays, self-published poetry, children's books, an artist's sketchbook, and academic papers that address the Grateful Dead as a topic. Also included are Deadhead submissions for "Tour Stories" solicited by the Grateful Dead organization in 2004 and intended for publication.

Physical Description: Contains 6 VHS tapes, 4 CDs, and 11 cassettes.

Correspondence and audiovisual media. Most of the materials in this box were created by Minnesota musician and artist Zadworny. The remaining materials were sent to Grateful Dead office manager Eileen Law and include mixtapes, demo recordings, and concert requests.

Correspondence, audio cassettes, micro cassettes, 45 rpm records, CDs, and VHS tapes. The bulk of these materials are demo or live concert recordings from unsigned bands. Also included are "audio letters," radio broadcasts including an interview with NBA Hall of Famer Bill Walton, and an audio copy of Ken Kesey's memorial service from 2001.
