    Abstract: This collection is comprised of material pertaining tot he Citizens University Committee, a community group founded in 1948 to aid the development of a University of California campus in Riverside and to strengthen relations within the community. Includes membership records, development proposals for the University of California, Riverside campus, scholarship funds, and project books. Correspondence with Gordon B. Watkins, University of California, Riverside's first provost and Robert Gordon Sproul,the President of University of California system from 1930-1958, lectures from visiting professors in the early years of the University of California, Riverside, and audiovisual material featuring Judge John Gabbert, one of the community members instrumental with the founding of the campus, are also included.

    Processing of the Citizens University Committee records was completed by undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside as part of the Special Collections & University Archives Backlog Processing Project started in 2015. This project was funded by the UCR Library and administered by Bergis Jules, University and Political Papers Archivist, and Eric Milenkiewicz, Manuscripts Curator.

    Historical Background

    The Citzens University Committee was founded in 1948 to aid the development of a University of California campus in Riverside and to strengthen relations within the community. The Citizens University Committee lobbied for and eventually succeeded in turning the land occupied by the Citrus Experiment Station into an undergraduate campus of the University of California.
