Administrative History

The Dean of the School of Medicine also serves as the Vice Chancellor - Health Sciences and is responsible for the operation of the University of California, San Diego Medical Center, as well as for the School of Medicine.
The Vice Chancellor/Dean is the chief academic officer of the School of Medicine and is directly responsible to the Chancellor for the school's governance and administration. A council of chairpersons, which includes the chairs of the School of Medicine departments, representatives from the participating departments of the general campus, and the Chair of the Faculty Council, advises the Dean on a wide range of matters concerning the administration of the Medical School. The Dean is assisted by Associate Deans.
The position of Dean of the School of Medicine was established in 1964. Incumbents include Joseph Stokes (1964-1967); Clifford Grobstein (1967-1973); John Moxley (1973-1979); Marvin Dunn, Acting Dean (1979-1980); J. William Hollingsworth, Acting Dean (1980-1981), Robert Petersdorf (1981-1986); and Wayne Akeson, Acting Dean (1986-1987).

Scope and Content of Collection

Records of the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences and Dean of the School of Medicine, containing files related to the function, organization and development of the School of Medicine. The materials include files related to academic departments, committees, buildings, affiliations, student enrollment, and census reports, as well as plans for academic and physical development. The materials are arranged in three series: 1) ADMINISTRATIVE FILES, 2) OUTGOING CORRESPONDENCE, and 3) PUBLICATIONS.

Series 1) ADMINISTRATIVE FILES: Arranged in four subseries: A) Grobstein, 1967-1973; B) Moxley, 1973-1979; C) Dunn, 1979-1980; and D) Hollingsworth, 1980-1981.
A) The Grobstein (1967-1973) subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject. The largest subseries in terms of quantity and scope of material it contains files related to academic departments (1963-1975), facilities (1965-1970), fiscal planning (1963-1971), and affiliations with neighboring health centers (1968-1973). Of particular interest are the folders entitled "School of Medicine (1962-1972)" and "Major Capital Improvement Program (1963-1973)," which reveal some of the early principal decisions pertaining to the administrative and physical organization of the UCSD School of Medicine. The folder entitled "School of Medicine - Facilities Planning" documents the decision regarding the physical location of the School of Medicine; while the folder entitled "School of Medicine - Broad Planning Program" contains drafts of a document entitled "A Functional Program for the UCSD School of Medicine," which outlines the early curriculum schedule for the program. Also of interest are the folders concerning the agreement between the Veterans Administration and UCSD regarding the VA Hospital, as well as the folders related to the acquisition and development of the San Diego County Hospital as a clinical teaching facility of the School of Medicine.
B) The Moxley (1973-1979) subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject. This subseries contains files related to the continued development of the School of Medicine and the Health Centers affiliated with the school. Of particular interest are the folders entitled "Children's Hospital Health Center (1973-1977)" concerning the attempts to constitute a relationship with the two institutions. The folders entitled "University Hospital - General (1974-1977)" document the renaming of the hospital from the University Hospital of San Diego County to University of California Medical Center, San Diego; as well as expansion and improvement projects related to the Medical Center. Also of interest is the folder entitled "University Hospital - Report to the Regents" documenting hospital census and utilization statisitics. The folders entitled "Construction Program (1973-1976)" document the physical development of the School of Medicine during Moxley's tenture as Dean/Vice Chancellor. The vast majority of the folders in this series are related to departments within the School of Medicine.
C) The Dunn (1979-1980) subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject. This subseries contains records primarily concerned with the University Hospital. The folder entitled "University Hospital - Negotiations" contains several news clippings and a draft report that briefly outlines the historical relationship between the University and the County Hospital, as well as the University's proposal to acquire the Hospital outright.
D) The Hollingsworth (1980-1981) subseries is arranged alphabetically by subject. The records document the continued development of academic departments, proposed academic programs, and health facilities and programs both on and off campus. The folder entitled "Long-Range Planning" contains a draft report of the long-range development plans for the University of California, San Diego. This report offers a succinct history of the university, including the School of Medicine and related Health Centers, and a comprehensive plan of anticipated growth, including maps.
