Biographical / Historical

Carey S. Bliss was born in 1914, the son of Leslie Bliss, head librarian of the Huntington Library from 1926-1958. Carey Bliss earned a degree from Pomona College in 1936 and began working as an assistant curator at The Huntington in 1937, serving as Curator of Rare Books until his retirement in 1982. He was an expert on the history of printing and had an interest in camellia cultivation. Carey Bliss was a longstanding member of the Rounce and Coffin Club, and served as the librarian for the Zamorano Club.

Scope and Contents

Materials related to the research and writing of Carey S. Bliss's Autos Across America: A Bibliography of Transcontinental Automobile Travel, 1903-1940. Includes manuscript and typescript drafts, copies of the first (1972) and second (1982) editions, and correspondence with other scholars and writers. Research materials include magazines, scholarly articles, advertisements, and other ephemera related to automobile travel in the United States.
