    Biography

Kent Haruf (1943-2014) was an American author. His novels, set in the fictional town of Holt, Colorado, explore the lives of ordinary people living on the high plains in the 20th Century. Plainsong (1999) was a finalist for the National Book Award and Benediction (2014) was shortlisted for the Folio Prize.

    Scope and Content

Manuscripts are arranged alphabetically by author's last name, and then by title. Included are notes and drafts of all of Haruf's published novels, as well as one unpublished novel, and several short stories and essays.
Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by author's last name, then chronologically. There is extensive correspondence with Haruf's agents at Sterling Lord Literistic, Inc., and later, Nancy Stauffer Associates, as well as publisher Alfred A. Knopf and editor Gary Fisketjon.
The ephemera are arranged in the following subseries: photographs, production and publicity, printed materials by and about Haruf, events and awards, miscellaneous, audio-visual, and realia.
There is one box of oversize manuscripts and correspondence, three additional boxes of oversize materials, five loose oversize folders, five loose scrapbook albums, and one oversize box containing Haruf's typewriter.

The collection is arranged in three major series: Manuscripts (Box 1-51), Correspondence (Box 52-99), and Ephemera (Box 101-112), as well as oversize materials (Box 100, 113-115), arranged primarily in alphabetical order by last name.
