Background
Kent Haruf (1943-2014) was an American author. His novels, set in the fictional town of Holt, Colorado, explore the lives
of ordinary people living on the high plains in the 20th Century. Plainsong (1999) was a finalist for the National Book Award
and Benediction (2014) was shortlisted for the Folio Prize.
