Content Description

This collection consists of manuscripts, notes, research materials, newspaper clippings, legal correspondence and cases, photographs and other materials documenting the life of Maurice "Jo" Jourdane. The materials cover Jourdane's work with the California Rural Legal Assistance, Diana v. California State Board of Education, Carmona v. Division of Industrial Safety, Jourdane v. Oglesy Brothers and other legal cases.

Biographical / Historical

Maurice Jourane is a civil rights lawyer, judge, and author. He worked with the Californai Rural Legal Assistance, United Farm Workers, and other organizations to improve civil rights for agricultural laborers in California.

Maurice 'Mo" Russell Jourdane was born on September 10, 1942 in Los Angeles, California. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from California State University, San Jose in 1965, and in 1968 graduated from the Hastings College of Law in 1968.

After graduating from law school, Jourdane worked as a staff attorney for the California Rural Legal Assistance. While at the CRLA he worked with the United Farm Workers to help end discriminatory English IQ tests for Spanish-speaking students in Diana v. Board of Education (1972). He also helped get 'el cortito', the short-handled hoe, banned by the California Supreme Court in Carmona v. Division of Industrial Safety (1974).

In the mid-1970s a truck crashed into Maurice Jourdane's car causing intensive injuries that required major reconstructive surgeries.

In the 1980s Jourdane worked for the California Agriculture Labor Relations Board, California's Fourth District Court of Appeals, the Department of Legal Affairs for Governor Jerry Brown, and as a Judge for the Monterey County Superior Court and Municipal Court.

Jourdane also served as an adjunct professor at UC Santa Cruz, Monterey College of Law, and Catholic University, worked as a field staff worker for a number of Democratic candidates. He is an author and a runner.
