Abstract: Gordon J. Stanley (1921-2001), radio astronomer and receiver expert, came to Caltech From Australia's CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) in 1955. He succeeded John Bolton as, first, acting director (1961) and then director (1965-1975) of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). His papers include working files, correspondence and other documents from the period of his association with OVRO, as well as papers concerning the work done by Stanley and Bolton in Australia prior to their association with Caltech.

Scope and Content

The small, yet unique, collection of Gordon J. Stanley Papers comprises seven document boxes. This collection has been organized into four series, and some series into subseries. The series organization is as follows: SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE SERIES 2: RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL FILES SERIES 3: WRITINGS AND PUBLICATIONS SERIES 4: BIOGRAPHICAL AND PERSONAL MATERIAL SERIES 1: CORRESPONDENCE. This series is one of the most interesting and richest portions of the Stanley Papers. It includes correspondence to and from individuals and organizations arranged alphabetically and then chronologically within folders, with incoming and outgoing letters filed together. Stanley was a key contributor along with John Bolton, Joe Pawsey, Bruce Slee and others to radio astronomy at Dover Heights, Australia. In 1955 Stanley left Australia and joined Bolton at Caltech. Their particularly close working relationship is well reflected in the correspondence. SERIES 2: RESEARCH AND TECHNICAL FILES. This series is divided into three subseries, covering Stanley's research involvement in radio astronomy, both in Australia and the United States. The bulk of the material in this series is from the period when Stanley served as acting director (1961) and later director (1965-1975) of the Owens Valley Radio Observatory (OVRO). SERIES 3: WRITINGS AND PUBLICATIONS. Series 3 is subdivided into two subseries. The first contains Stanley's published papers, mostly in the form of article reprints, arranged chronologically by publication date. Subseries 2 contain reprints and preprints of others, from 1949 to 1982, in radio astronomy, organized chronologically by publication date as well. SERIES 4: BIOGRAPHICAL AND PERSONAL MATERIAL. This series contains a small amount of biographical material, especially concerning Stanley's early years at Dover Heights and later at Caltech.
The collection is organized into the following series:
  • Series 1. Correspondence
  • Series 2. Research and technical files
  • Series 3. Writings and Publications
  • Series 4. Biographical and Personal Material
