Biography
Elizabeth Spedding Calciano was born in Iowa in 1939 and lived in Ames, Iowa until her college years. She received an A.B.
cum laude in history from Radcliffe College in 1961 and an MA from Stanford University in 1962. She and her husband moved
to the Santa Cruz area in 1962, and her husband worked as a physician in Santa Cruz.
Mrs. Calciano was hired by Dean McHenry as the founding director of the Regional History Project on July 1, 1963, two years
before UCSC opened its doors. She was UCSC's 13th staff person and held the first professional appointment in the University
Library after founding University Librarian Donald T. Clark. Beginning in 1967, Calciano taught a course on the history of
Santa Cruz County for University Extension. In 1969 she wrote and published The Campus Guide: A Tour of the Natural Environment
and Points of Historical Interest, which included her extensive research on the Cowell Ranch. She served as director of the
Regional History Project until 1974.

This small collection contains research papers on the Cowell Ranch and early land grants and grantees in the Santa Cruz and
Pajaro Valley area.
