Scope and Content
The Hugh A. Edmondson papers contains correspondence, photographs, artifacts, business documentation, publications, reports,
biographies, autobiographies, and many other miscellaneous documents. Edmondson is recognized as an expert in pancreatic and
liver diseases and was often consulted for his knowledge. The collection’s correspondence includes both personal and business
letters. People reached out to Dr. Edmondson for various requests, ranging from his opinion on the diagnoses of patients to
his input on the delegation of funding for research. Beyond personal correspondence, this collection includes other private
documents like hand-written journal-like papers, and personal photographs. However, the documents included mostly consist
of paperwork, budgets, print publications and notes about the USC Department of Medicine, particularly the Department of Pathology.
The format of the information varies based on the content. Two important court case documents that Dr. Edmonson was involved
in are also included. These legal documents are lengthy and include testimonies by him. There are Academic Papers in the collection
that consist of recommendations for the curriculum and lecture outlines. The Hugh A. Edmondson papers also provides a detailed
history of medical education at USC. These historical documents note numerous key figures and the overall advances of the
program. There are autobiographical texts on Dr. Edmonson and biographical texts on others involved in the Doheny Eye Foundation,
and on other doctors at USC. One group of documents in this section includes Dr. Edmondson’s death wishes and print publications
about his death and accomplishments. Furthermore, the collection includes print publications about the USC School of Medicine
including newspaper clippings, magazine articles, and reports. By providing a detailed account of Dr. Edmondson’s successes
and contributions to the medical field, this collection presents many advancements made by the USC School of Medicine.
