Biography / Administrative History

Camp Fire, Inc., headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., was founded by Dr. and Mrs. Luther H. Gulick (1910) and incorporated in 1912. The organization was originally called Camp Fire Girls, Inc. In 1975, the name was changed to Camp Fire Boys and Girls when the organization decided to include all children. The name was changed again to Camp Fire USA, and then to the current name of Camp Fire. Participants are assigned to one of four levels within the organization based upon age, the Blue Birds being the youngest members of the Camp Fire Girls. The Stockton Campfire Girls were organized in September 1913, and their summer camp was called Camp Minkalo, which from 1919-1922 was at different locations within California, before settling on Silver Lake.
This collection was created by Wendy Hamma Nipper, who was a member of the Blue Birds and Camp Fire Girls, and later became a leader for the Central Valley group as well as a Council Board member. Her mother, Elizabeth Hamma, was also a former Camp Fire Girl and leader. Some of the materials came from Lorianne Nipper Murillo and Peggy Tafoya.

Scope and Content of Collection

The collection contains photographs, scrapbooks, flyers, newspaper clippings, various ephemera, as well as textiles and other memorabilia from the Camp Fire and Blue Birds groups in the Central Valley. These materials came from the collections of former Blue Bird and Camp Fire members and leaders.
