Scope and Content

The collection contains documents pertaining to the real estate holdings of Rachel Granger Wegeforth for property in Horton’s Addition in San Diego and Reyes Tract in Los Angeles. Real estate documents include deed transfers, title insurance statements, a lease and declarations of trust. Also included are documents on a dispute regarding the Granger family masoleum and a copy of Rachel's birth certificate.

Biographical / Historical Notes

Rachel Granger Wegeforth was born on January 10, 1893, the daughter of Ralph Granger and Jessie Hastings Granger. Ralph owned two of the largest silver mines in Colorado and a large amount of real estate in downtown San Diego, part of Horton’s Addition. In 1916 Rachel married Dr. Harry Wegeforth, who later founded the San Diego Zoo. Rachel was a community leader and philanthropist, and in 1924 founded the Silvergate Riding Club.
