Collection Scope and Content Summary
This collection consists of two scrapbooks containing the press clippings of the Ballet
Russe de Monte Carlo's 1947 and 1956-1957 seasons. The clippings are mostly from American
and Canadian newspapers and are in English and French.
Of particular interest are the press clippings of the April 30, 1957 incident at the
Metropolitan Opera House in New York when Sergei Denham, director of the Ballet Russe,
brought down the curtain before Alexandra Danilova's final solo in
Gaite Parisienne in order to avoid paying overtime to the cast and crew. The
scrapbook of the 1956-1957 season contains more than 110 clippings about this incident.
