Her visual artwork touches upon sociopolitical themes of family, politics, women's rights, the environment, cultural celebrations, and immigration. Hom also served as Executive Director of the Kearny Street Workshop, an Asian Pacific American arts organization, from 1995-2003. Her papers include correspondence, publications, and artwork that represent her active involvement with nonprofit organizations and cultural communities in the Bay Area. This collection will continue to grow periodically.

Biographical/Historical note

Nancy Hom is a silkscreen artist, writer, graphic designer, curator, and children's book illustrator. Based in San Francisco, Nancy Hom was the long-time executive director for the Kearny Street Workshop and was co-founder of the Asian American Media Collective in New York City. She moved to San Francisco in 1974 and became involved in developing neighborhood arts organizations there. Kearny Street Workshop is the oldest surviving multidisciplinary Asian American community arts organization in the United States.
Nancy Hom is known for her vibrant posters and illustrations. She was born in Toishan Province, China and moved to New York City at age 5, graduating from Pratt Institute with a B.F.A. in illustration and visual communication. She is an internationally exhibited artist and has worked with many Bay Area arts groups, including the Galeria de la Raza, Japan Art and Media Workshop. Nancy Hom has been associated with Kearny Street Workshop for over 30 years as an artist, community activist, executive director, and member of the Board of Directors. The Nancy Hom Papers were established in CEMA in 2002.

Scope and Contents note

Nancy Hom is a San Francisco based Chinese American artist, activist, writer, curator, and arts administrator. Her visual artwork touches upon sociopolitical themes of family, politics, women's rights, the environment, cultural celebrations, and immigration. Hom also served as Executive Director of the Kearny Street Workshop, an Asian Pacific American arts organization, from 1995-2003. Her papers include correspondence, publications, and artwork that represent her active involvement with nonprofit organizations and cultural communities in the Bay Area. This collection will continue to grow periodically.

Arrangement

This collection is arranged into four series.
Series I. Biographical files. The series includes correspondence and notes written by and sent to Hom.
Series II. Publications This series includes numerous magazine articles and newspaper clippings that feature Hom and her work.
Series III. Events This series includes postcards, announcement flyers, and organizational files for art and exhibition events and workshops.
Series IV. Silkscreens This series contains a variety of screen print posters that Hom designed. They range from celebratory Carnaval announcement prints, to women's rights related pieces, and more. The posters are arranged in alphabetical order.

Description/Comments

This silkscreen poster is announcing an event titled "A Reading of Works in Progress by the Asian American Playwriting Workshop," which is written in magenta text under the main image. The image, which is offset toward the upper-left of the poster, is a black and white profile of a face. The face is white with sparse black features for the mouth, nose, and eyes, and the background is black. The face is on the left side of the image and facing the right. Below the image and above the title is smaller black text reading, "Asian American Theatre Workshop Presents," and below the title in black text are the details of the event and venue. The event took place in San Francisco, and the playwrights are listed as Nellie Wong, Presco Tabios, Yuri Kageyama, Merle Woo, and Nancy Hom. Description/Comments

This silkscreen poster is announcing an exhibition of posters by Nancy Hom, Zand Gee, and Stephanie Lowe. The background of the poster is gray, and is framed by a white border. Near the top of the poster is an image of many beige-colored posters hanging in a row. "Posters About People" is written in red Chinese characters on the right side of the image. Part of the title, "A/P," is written in large letters below the image, with a color gradient blending from red to purple. To the right of these letters is a block of smaller white text with the rest of the title, "Posters About People," as well as the names of the contributing artists. At the bottom of the poster is a block of small white text with the details of the event, separated by a horizontal line that is purple and red. The event took place at the "Chinese Culture Center" in San Francisco.

Description/Comments

This is a silkscreen announcement poster for the 1982 "Repertory Performance" by the Asian American Dance Collective. The borders of the poster are white, and the central image depicts a green stylized dancing figure over a rectangular red backdrop. The figure's head is black. The red area is bordered on the top and bottom by a thin yellow stripe. Below the image is red and gray text describing the event and venue details. The event took place in San Francisco at the "Margaret Jenkins Dance Studio." "© N. Hom 1982" appears along the lower-right side of the image.

Description/Comments

Underneath that, it has the word "Performance" in a larger font size and in pink. This silkscreen poster depicts a woman of color with a red, green, and yellow feather headdress and she is wearing a red dress, a green and a yellow necklace and red, yellow, and green bangles and red earrings. On top of the poster, it states "Carnaval San Francisco 1987" in yellow. On the left bottom corner of the poster, it states "In the mission district June 14, 1987" and underneath that, it states: "Special Guests: Carlos Santana & friends" all printed in yellow. On the right bottom corner of the poster, it has the schedule of the carnaval.
 

Carnaval '80 1980

Description/Comments

This silkscreen poster is announcing the carnaval of 1980. It depicts several faceless people of color in red shirts with white stars on them playing drums. On top of the poster, it states "Carnaval '80" in red and underneath that, there are several different colored bands (brown, green, and red). On the brown band, it states "Grand Parade, Mission St. to Dolores Pk." in white. On the green band, it has "Sunady, April 13 12 noon" in white. The red band on the left side of the poster states "for information call 285-7833' in black and on the red band on the right side of the poster, it states "festival 2pm Dolores Pk." in black. "©N.HOM 1980" is printed in black on the lower right hand corner of the poster.
 

Carnaval Tropical 1988

Description/Comments

This silkscreen poster is announcing for the carnaval of 1988. At top of the poster, it states "Carnaval Tropical" in red font that is outlined with yellow and underneath that it states San Francisco 1988 in yellow. The poster has an image of a woman in a blue bikini top with yellow, red, and purple decorations on it and in a similar blue bottom that has a yellow and red ruffle around it. On the left side of the poster, it has a list of all of the activities of the carnaval.
 

Changing Images Through Action 1987

Physical Description: 17.5 x 22.5 in

Description/Comments

This poster depicts three people that are blended into a black background. The black background is framed by a border consisting of a color gradient composed of yellow, orange, red, and pink. Then the entire image including the color gradient border is framed by a white border. At the top of the poster, the text states "The Coalition for Civil Rights presents" in orange and underneath that, in a light blue print, it states "Changing Images Through Action." Underneath the three people's faces, printed in a color gradient of peach to pink, it states "Saturday, November 7, 1987 8:30 a.m. -9:00 p.m. The Sheraton-Palace Hotel San Francisco Keynote Speaker: Paula J. This silkscreen poster depicts a woman in an orange dress with teal flower on it, lying down and asleep with her arms crossed over her chest. She is sleeping in front of a light blue background and the image is framed by a white border. At the lower right hand corner of the image, it is signed by Nancy Hom. Also at the bottom of the image, handwritten there is ""Dreaming Woman"" and at the bottom left hand corner, "A/P" is handwritten.

This silkscreen poster depicts a woman of color releasing a white dove from her outstretched hand. Her eyes are closed. She is wearing a black and white striped hajib with a teal stripe, and red clothing. The background is teal. Above the image is the title in red, "International Women's Day 1987." In the upper-right corner of the image in white text is the second part of the title, "Women's Voices For Peace And Justice." Description/Comments

This silkscreen poster depicts four women of color smiling and laughing. Last Resorts 1983

Description/Comments

This silkscreen poster depicts a tropical beach with a mushroom cloud in the background. Near the top of the image is yellow text reading "Last Resorts." In the foreground is a red and white striped umbrella, a blue blanket on the ground, and white sunglasses on the blanket. To the left and right are tall palm trees which extend to the top of the image. In the center, above the sand, is blue water with white ripples. Beyond the water is a red and yellow sky with a black mushroom cloud in the middle. The image has a thin black border, and is framed by white space.

This silkscreen is a poster that was made the Western Addition Cultural Center for an event that they were having, "marron a taiko dojo." The name of the center and the event is printed in black and underneath the event name is the date, time, and location (April 7 7:30pm 762 Fulton St SF) which is also printed in black. Next to that information is "$1 donation." The rest of the poster consists of a large colorful swirling design that consists of red, pink, blue, and green over a silver background. "© N.Hom 1979" is located on the lower right hand side of the poster and next to it, it is signed by Nancy Hom.
