Abstract: Ray Martin (1918-1988) was a composer,
arranger, and conductor for BBC-TV, Columbia Records, RCA, and motion pictures. The
collection contains the original manuscript scores in the composer's hand, and are numbered
1 through 342. There are nearly 600 pieces, including the unnumbered songs written for
twenty-one of Martin's ablums.

Biographical Information:
Ray Martin was a composer, arranger, and conductor for BBC-TV, Columbia Records, RCA, and
scored numerous motion pictures. He was born in Vienna, Austria, and attended the Vienna
Academy for Music and Dramatic Arts where he studied violin and majored in music theory. In
1938, Martin moved to London and earned a living performing with Caroll Levis' amateur
talent shows and with various revues.
Ray Martin worked at BBC Radio from 1946-1955. During his tenure, he was the resident
conductor-arranger for BBC Radio and BBC TV. He also worked for Columbia Records as Artists
and Repertoire Director from 1950-1958. At Columbia, he produced over two thousand records,
including thirty albums and singles as an artist. He was assistant head of the Music
Department for the Associated British Picture Corporation in Elstree, England from
1956-1958, sometimes writing under the pseudonyms Tony Simmonds and Lester Powell during
that time.
Ray Martin immigrated to the United States in 1957, and settled in New York. He was
Artists and Repertoire Producer and advisor on European products for RCA from 1960-1962,
Vice President of Music Production at RPM Associates, Inc., and half owner of RPM
Associates, Inc. from 1960-1968. RPM produced music for commercials and industry films. In
1968, Martin moved to Los Angeles, where he composed and arranged music for RCA and other
labels.

The
Ray Martin Music Scores Collection contains original
manuscript scores in the composer's hand that are numbered 1 through 342. There are nearly
600 pieces, including the unnumbered songs written for twenty-one of Martin's albums. Ray
Martin assigned unique sequential numbers to his scores. Boxes 1 through 37 include Martin's
numbered scores in sequence; the number Martin assigned is listed in the title of each item.
Boxes 38 and 39 contain unnumbered scores.
