Biographical / Historical
Gerald E. Kron (1913-2012) was an astronomer who worked at the Lick Observatory, the U.S. Naval Observatory in Flagstaff,
Arizona, and at Mt. Stromlo Observatory. He is known for advancing the study of stellar populations and interstellar reddening
through measuring the photometry of variable stars (eclipsing binaries, interacting binaries, pulsating stars, and eruptive
variables), stars of extreme luminosity (supergiants and late M dwarfs), and star clusters. Kron began his academic career
by earning a graduate degree in mechanical engineering in 1934 at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where he studied under
astronomer Joel Stebbins. In 1935, Kron began conducting observations at Mt. Wilson with Stebbins and Albert Whitford, and
earned his Ph.D. in astronomy in 1938 from the University of California, Berkeley. He worked at the Lick Observatory as a
staff astronomer until 1965, then relocated to Flagstaff, Arizona with his wife, Katherine, and worked as the Director of
the United States Naval Observatory until 1973. Kron then moved to the Australian National University to become a Senior Research
Fellow from 1974 to 1976. In 1985 the Krons moved to Honolulu, and then after Gerald’s retirement, moved back to Arizona in
1998. Gerald Kron died in Sedona, Arizona, on April 9, 2012.
