Biography/History
The University of California, Los Angeles's International Studies and Overseas Program (ISOP) formally began in 1958 as the
Institute of International and Foreign Studies (IIFP). It's founding functions were to promote international interdisciplinary
studies, and to serve as a liaison for government, international agencies, and international dignitaries and visitors to the
university. ISOP oversaw programs that sent students to such places as Brazil, Chile, Iran, Nigeria, Japan, Argentina, China,
Columbia, Ghana, Peru, and Puerto Rico. Additionally, ISOP oversaw a Peace Corps program at UCLA.
Scope and Content
Record Series 158 contains administrative files generated by UCLA's International Studies and Overseas Programs between 1956-1986.
Files regard programs abroad, local events, grants, and the actions of committees, societies, and centers. Special focus is
given to the Committee on International and Comparative Studies (CICS), National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), Southern
California Consortium on International Studies (SOCCIS), the Chile-California Cooperative Program, European Emigre Seminars,
European Studies, UC MEXUS, and Peace Corps programs. Materials include reports, drafts, meeting documentation, correspondence,
proposals, newsletters, planning documents, directories, and other administrative and operational files.
