Biography/Administrative History

Dr. James Rice Hadsell opened the first apothecary on Alvarado Street in Monterey in 1869. By 1879 he expanded his popular practice to include a partner, druggist George W. Reed. In 1887 Hadsell sold his business to Francis Martin Hilby. In 1891 Hilby moved the "Monterey Pharmacy" to the southeast corner of Franklin and Alvarado streets. In 1902 Benjamin Franklin Wright established the "Palace Drug Company" in a store at 318 Alvarado street. By 1907 Wright entered into partnership with M. W. Menamin and, in 1914, they bought Hilby's Drug Store and moved the business to 401 Alvarado Street.

Scope and Content of Collection

Includes registers of Pacific Hotel reused as prescription registers. Prescription slips include those of Dr. James R. Hadsell, as well as his competitor Alexander Westfall and various customers including Mrs. David Jacks, Jose Abrego, Charles Crocker, and others.
