Background

Scope and content:

Almost all the materials in the Anson Reinhart collection are from the years 1970 to 1972 and consist of gay liberation, gay male consciousness raising, feminist, and lesbian printed materials from a radical/socialist point of view. Reinhart was a member of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF). Many are Bay Area materials; the rest are national in scope. Included in the “Lesbians” folder is an early lesbian anthology, Lesbians Speak Out, printed by a San Francisco woman’s press collective and containing writings from 1965 to 1970. Another file of literary interest is The Image of Women in Homophile Novels, an early piece of feminist literary criticism of gay male novels. Also of interest are the campaign speeches and flyers from the Frank Kameny for Congress run in 1971, and a selection of Socialist Workers Party Discussion Bulletins on gay liberation and feminism. The Papers also include 10 audio cassette tapes of board meetings of Golden Gate Gay Liberation, Inc. (Golden Gate Gay Liberation House and Survival Project) from 1978. The are no transcripts of these tapes but they do contain the official board minutes of the organization. Golden Gate Gay Liberation House was a gay halfway house in the Lower Haight neighborhood that provided temporary housing and counseling to marginalized gay youth and helped connect them with social services available in the Bay Area.
