Abstract: Mostly commercial views of cities and miscellaneous subjects, including images of Mormon figureheads, Salt Lake City, Utah;
city scenes of San Francisco; and some views of Native Americans of the Southwest and Great Plains. Also included are posed
photographs of Japanese women and men in traditional dress.

Scope and Content of Collection
Photographs of Utah depict Mormon leader Brigham Young; third president of the Mormon Church John Taylor; Salt Lake City;
Gardo House; the Mormon Tabernacle; and Paiute Indians being baptized into the Mormon faith by Mormon men.
California photographs show Yosemite; the Sierra Nevadas; Oakland; city scenes of San Francisco; and the mansions of Mark
Hopkins, George Crocker, Collis P. Huntington, and Leland Stanford.
Other photographs are of Paiute Indians, Navajo Indians, Pueblo Indians, Bannock Indians, Niagara Falls, Union Square and
Central Park in New York City, and the Central Pacific Railroad.
Also included are hand-colored photographs of Japanese women and men in posed scenarios, some with musical instruments. It
is unclear whether these photographs were taken in the United States or in Japan.
Photographers who contributed to this collection include Alfred A. Hart, B.A. Hawkins, J. Notman, Charles Roscoe Savage, and
Isaiah West Taber.
