Abstract: Erica Reinisch lived in Shanghai during the 1930s and 1940s. The collection consists of photographs depicting the Japanese bombing of Shanghai in 1937, Shanghai foreign residents ration coupons from 1949, an alien resident certificate from1949, Chinese sketches by the artist Fei Pai Yee, watercolor and ink drawings by artist Friedrich Schiff, and a publication discussing the political climate in Shanghai in 1937.

Scope and Contents

The Erica Reinisch Collection consists of items related to life in Shanghai during the 1930s and 1940s. The collection is divided into three series: Shanghai Materials (1937, 1949) Fei Pai Yee Sketches (circa 1930-circa 1939), and Friedrich Schiff Drawings (circa 1930-circa 1938).
Series I, Shanghai Materials, consists of photographs and publications depicting the Japanese bombing of Shanghai in 1937, as well as Shanghai foreign residents ration coupons and an alien resident certificate from 1949.
Series II, Fei Pai Yee Sketches, consists of four hand colored sketches of Shanghai scenes by the artist Fei Pai Yee published by the Pacific Press Service in Shanghai. The sketches are all notably moveable images, with either a wheel (volvelle) disc or pull tabs that can be moved to change a section of the sketch.
Series III, Freidrich Schiff Drawings, consists of eleven ink and watercolor drawings done by the artist Friedrich Schiff, which humorously depict scenes of social life in Shanghai during the 1930s.
