Biographical / Historical

Robert S. Harrah (1925-1989) was an American photo journalist and essayist. Harrah served in the Navy during WWII and spent almost two years in the South Pacific. During his service, Harrah met photographer W. Eugene Smith. After the war, Harrah attended photography school and then worked as an assistant to Smith in New York from 1947-1949, before returning to work in photography in California. Harrah took assignments from various publications including Life and Esquire magazines. The photos in this collection of sheep herder Robert "Bob" Boyd were to be published in Life, but with the outbreak of Korean War the project was dropped and the images were not published.
