Immediate Source of Acquisition
Purchased from Sotheby's, Lots 155 and 184, June 1953.
Richard Shackleton (1728-1792) was the son of Abraham Shackleton (1697-1771), founder of
the Quaker school at Ballitore, Co. Kildare, Ireland. In 1756, Shackleton succeeded his
father as master of the school, where he remained until replaced by his son Abraham
Shackleton in 1779. Shackleton's first wife, Elizabeth (Fuller) Shackleton died in 1754; he
later married Elizabeth (Carleton) Shackleton, who was active in local charities.
A collection of 401 items from 1658 to 1808, it consists of the correspondence of Richard
Shackleton and his wife Elizabeth (Carleton) Shackleton. Many of the letters addressed to
Richard Shackleton are from parents whose children attended the Ballitore Quaker school and
former students commenting on university life. The remaining portion of the collection
consists of letters written from the Shackletons to their friend Elizabeth (Pim) Pike of
Dublin. Although most of the letters concern the Society of Friends in Ireland, there are
some items relating to activities of Friends in England and America. There are a few items
from the latter seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, including individual letters by
George Whitehead and William Penn.
Processed by Huntington Library Staff, circa 1960. In 2020, Gayle Richardson created the
finding aid derived from a legacy summary report.
Arranged chronologically.
Individual call numbers included in the collection: mssSHA 1-401.
