Topics include her research in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, and linguistics, university teaching, professional and recreational activities, and activism on behalf of cultural and environmental resources in the United States and abroad.
Languages: Collection materials are primarily in English and Spanish. Select materials are in German, Italian, and French.

The Sylvia M. Broadbent papers were acquired as a gift in 2007. Additional items were donated and added to the collection in 2011.

Appraisal Information

Approximately one linear foot was removed from the papers during processing. Files contained select financial, legal, and other records outside the scope of this collection, as well as published materials available from other repositories.

Biography

Sylvia M. Broadbent, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of California, Riverside, was born in London on February 26, 1932. In 1947, her family immigrated to the United States and settled in Carmel, California, where Broadbent finished high school the following year at the age of 16. She began her undergraduate studies at the University of California, Berkeley in the fall of 1948, graduating with highest honors in 1952. Broadbent remained at Berkeley for graduate school, earning her Ph.D. in Anthropology in 1960. She wrote her dissertation on the Southern Sierra Miwok language.
Dr. Broadbent's teaching career began in the spring quarter of 1961 when she taught a linguistics course at Northwestern University. She moved to New York City in September of 1961, taking up a position in the Anthropology Department at Columbia University's Barnard College. In the fall of 1964, Broadbent relocated to Bogotá, Colombia to teach at the Universidad de Los Andes, where she stayed for approximately two years.
Her academic career at UC Riverside began in the fall of 1966. During her tenure at UCR, she has taught courses on topics studied in her research, including linguistics, symbolism, and language and culture. Her specialties include archaeology, ethnohistory, and descriptive and historical linguistics. Much of her research is focused on the Chibcha culture of Colombia and North American Indians of California and the Desert West. Broadbent has served as Chairman for the Anthropology Department as well as Administrator for the Archaeological Research Unit. A fellowship at UC Riverside has been named in her honor and provides support for graduate students in Anthropology.
In addition to her formal work as a professor and scholar, Broadbent devoted significant time to extracurricular activities and organizations of various types.

The Sylvia M. Broadbent papers include correspondence, field and research notes, manuscripts, publications, photographs, slides, realia, and other material pertaining to Dr. Sylvia M. Broadbent, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at the University of California, Riverside. The bulk of the papers, dating from 1948-1990, document topics that are both professional and personal in scope. Professional records pertain to Broadbent's university teaching, scholarly research, activities in the academic community, and field work in California and South America. Personal records pertain to family affairs, Broadbent's formal education, and recreational and extracurricular pursuits, including activism on behalf of cultural and environmental resources in the United States and abroad.

This sub-series contains typed and handwritten drafts of articles, ethnographic narratives, research notes, correspondence, and other unpublished material produced by Sylvia M. Broadbent and others. Articles are primarily working drafts of papers by Broadbent that were subsequently accepted for publication, though select articles are authored by colleagues. Correspondence represented here exclusively pertains to the revision and submission of manuscripts for publication and is between Broadbent and editorial staff. Research notes document sources consulted as well as Broadbent's writing process.
Photographs interfiled with notes and drafts are also included, however the bulk of the collection's photographs are contained in Series 7.

Series Scope and Content Summary

This series contains field notes, slides, photographs, records of archaeological excavations and artifacts, cameras, and other material used by Sylvia M. Broadbent to document her research and field work. Materials include tools used in the field to excavate, clean, identify, and describe artifacts, as well as photographic documentation of artifacts, archaeological sites, and other locations. Notes, manuscripts, reports, and correspondence exclusively pertaining to fieldwork and documentation are also included. The bulk of the slides are labeled, while only select photographs are individually captioned.
Because many folders maintain the original filing scheme of the creator, select records outside the scope of this series are included.
