Muir: Your letter came as a delightful surprise to me and I wish you might know how deeply I appreciate your kind words
concerning my book. Trails Through Western Woods. The critics have been generous in their praise of this, my first volume
and I am grateful to them all, 04956 2 but no book review I have received is as gratifying to me as your letter. I
did not know that you had visited Lake McDonald in your wanderings and I am glad if my descriptions have revivified your recollections
of that most glorious country. As for me, I find myself strangely devoted to the lake and its surrounding mountains; so much
so that the lure of it calls me
