50 Portage Wisconsin June 28, 1896. My dear Johnson. I reached Portage in time for mothers funeral all was done under
the the most satisfactory auspices. Mother was beautiful in life death she suffered little or not at all, the natural sleep
of weariness gradually deepening into the sleep of death. It was very fortunate that I was called east so was led to her side
when she most longed to see me You have been my good angel, have fairly crowded compacted the days in New York with good
things illegible , Burroughs, Osbornes best of all Yourself. Heaven bless you. I hope to meet Sargent at Chicago on July
