Martinez, Bee. 31, 1901. My dear Merriam, Happy New Tear to yon all. Hay it be as mountainous and good as the last. The
grand lot of beautiful pictures I have already acknowledged in a letter that seems to have gone astray. Many of these photos
are the best I have ever seen of the Sierra. I am sorely troubled about my publishers failing to give credit to photographers
as I directed and although I carefully wrote the makers name on every photograph I sent them. Not only this but in an advertisement
they sent out they say that the book is illustrated by photographs many of which were taken by the author. Of course I immediately
wrote to Houghton-Mifflin about it saying that I never took a single photo in my life, calling attention to their neglect
to give credit, and asking them to correct these blunders and omissions, etc. The advertisements they said would be stopped
etc. and made vague excuse for mistakes. As to the Oregon and Washington sheep pasturage. Pinchot said to me in Seattle when
I called his attention to an interview in a morning paper that sheep did no harm in the Oregon and Washington forests. This
he printed in the principal newspapers soon after the Cleveland reserves were proclaimed with a view to still the storm of
protest, and thus he made the hearts of the sheepmen glad. Coville too and indeed nearly the whole Bureau sing the same song,
in some form, to avoid opposition and trouble of western Senators.-- 02912
