[Nix?], Modesty- Modesty adorns virtue, as bashfulness ornaments beauty; it harmonises with a just sense of character, as moderation harmonises with justice. It [brightens] dignity of character, as simplicity enhaces greatness It adds to merit the same charms which conder adds to goodness of heart. What is modesty? It is not a sense of excellence so deep and true, that the observance of duty appears a natural thing?- it is not so sincere a desire for what is excellent that who is wondering is much more [percepted] than what is alraedy obtained? It is not so pure a love for what is good That it even forgets the reward reserved for merit in the [approbation] of others? -Degerando- [Nix?] last journey to [Brundy] to express it five packages many value (1,050) [dls]. ------------------------------ March 8, Tuesday.
