Early this morning started to bid my numerous friends good bye at [four o' clock] was and more [aboard] the [illegible] to [Eilmine] when shall I see my dear Rochester friends again arrived in [Eilmine] at 11PM and took lodging at the Solider home. Will start in the morning to visit my Aunt and Cousins in [town]. Kiss [illegible] This morning at 6'oclock I started [illegible] the stage to Horseheads and from [there] walked 18 miles to Newfiled surprised my Aunt and Cousin and made [illegible] here of the neighborhood. A long and [illegible] journey but I feel sure that I shall not be sorry. Judith received the first kiss, am very tired indeed, but [illegible] quite a suffer of good country bread and milk. ------------------------------ June 24, Friday. Early this morning started to bid numerous friends good bye. At four o’clock was once more aboard the cars to Elmira. Arrived in Elmira at 11 pm and took lodging at the Soldiers Home, will start in the morning to visit my aunt and cousins in Tomkins County. This morning at 5 o’clock I started, took the stage to Horseheads [3.] and from there walked 18 miles to Newfield, surprised my aunt and cousins, am made the hero of the neighbourhood. A long and tedious journey, but I feel sure that I shall not be sorry. Judith [4.] received the first kiss, am very tired indeed but eat quite a supper of good country bread and milk. Horseheads is a town in Chemug County NY and is located north of Elmira on which it borders. Newfirld now known as Newfield Hamlet lies in the center of the town of Newfield, located on the Elmira Road SW of Ithaca NY. 4. Judith Underdown, his future wife and cousin.
